DIY Packing? How to Pack Dishes for Moving Like a Pro
Packing dishes can be one of the most time-consuming parts of any move. Without proper protection, fragile kitchenware like plates, bowls, cups, and glassware are at high risk for chips or breakage during transit. Whether you’re preparing for a local move or a long-distance relocation, using the right techniques and materials is essential to keeping your items safe.
🧰 What You’ll Need:
● Dish pack boxes (double-walled for extra protection)
● Packing paper (plain newsprint)
● Bubble wrap
● Packing tape
● Foam plates or cardboard dividers (optional)
● Markers for labeling
Step-by-Step Guide: How to Pack Dishes
Step 1: Prepare the Box
Use a dish pack or heavy-duty moving box. Line the bottom of the box with a generous cushion of crumpled packing paper, about 2–3 inches thick, to absorb shock.
Step 2: Wrap Each Item
Take a stack of packing paper and wrap each dish individually:
● Plates and bowls: Place the dish in the center of a sheet, fold corners over, and continue wrapping with more sheets as needed.
● Cups and mugs: Fill the inside with paper, then wrap entirely.
● Glassware and stemware: Wrap with bubble wrap or double-layered packing paper. Consider packing these upright in divided cells.
Step 3: Stack Vertically
Always stack plates, bowls, and platters vertically (like records), not flat. This reduces surface area pressure and prevents breakage.
Step 4: Fill Gaps
Use crumpled paper to fill all empty spaces in the box to keep items from shifting. Add another layer of paper on top once the box is full.
Step 5: Seal and Label
Secure the box tightly with packing tape. Clearly label as “FRAGILE – DISHES” and note which side should be kept upright.
